A Tale of the Vintner's First Crush

Grape Harvest with Jon McPherson Each year, about this time, no matter what winery you visit in Temecula, you’ll sense the excitement in the air. Winemakers, vintners and vineyard crew are preparing for their first crush!

On Monday, August 4th, approximately 30 tons of dewy, green chardonnay berries were plucked from their vines and piled into the trailer-mounted bins for the first crush of the Temecula Valley right here at South Coast Winery Resort & Spa. “It looks like it is going to be a very good season for us,” says Master Winemaker Jon McPherson with a grin as wide as the state of Texas, his home state. These berries were destined for the award winning South Coast Winery Extra Dry and Brut style sparkling wines.

How wine begins For those not familiar with the harvest process, the harvest typically continues through September. During this time, winemakers and viniculturists keep their eyes on the grapes, testing sugar content regularly. The vineyard crews are kept on alert so that when a certain vineyard varietial’s sugar content reaches a certain level that's appropriate for the end product, they are ready to go. In fact, we have been known to call up our resort guests for the past two summers, when the resort's vineyards are ready for picking, with a special invitation to join in the harvest. Our first year’s team of guests harvested the resort’s Gewurztraminer grapes in 2006 and helped us create a wine that took top-honors, the SWEEPSTAKES medal, from the Temecula Wine Competition. Last year’s guests harvested the 2007 Gewurztraminer, and that wine has already earned 15 awards and medals to date in regional and international competitions including 1 best of region, 3 best of class and 6 gold medals, to name a few. Each “Crush” is a unique fun-filled event and our resort guests keep coming back each year to experience the rush of the crush.
